Parley Cantrell Obituary

Elder Parley Cantrell of West Liberty, KY, widower of Gladys Jean Cantrell went to sleep in the arms of Jesus on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the age of 94 years, 8 months, & 12 days.  Jesus decided it was time for Parley to enter into his final rest; waiting to meet him in the midway of the air when that time comes.

Parley was born in Morgan County, Kentucky to Arnett & Polly Cantrell on August 1, 1929.  He had three sisters and five brothers.  He was united in marriage to Gladys Jean Hill on November 21, 1950.  They were married for over 65 years.

Parley joined the Burning Springs Association of Regular Primitive Baptist as a member of the Old Paint Primitive Baptist Church and later the Walnut Grove Primitive Baptist Church.  He was ordained as an Elder in 1960 and served as an ordained Elder in the Burning Springs Association for over sixty-five years.  He served as the Moderator of the Walnut Grove Primitive Baptist Church for over thirty-five years.  Parley loved going to church.  Although he was reluctant to take the stand; he was a truly blessed man when the Lord blessed him.

Parley worked for the United States Postal Service, the Lycoming Shoe Company, The Morgan County Board of Education, and the Kentucky Department of Workforce Development.  Retiring at the age of seventy-nine.  All the while farming and raising cattle as long as his health allowed.

Parley and Jean had five sons that would later add daughters-in-law, nine grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren.

Parley was preceded in death by his parents, Arnett and Polly Cantrell; his wife, Gladys Jean Hill Cantrell; brothers, Parel, Paris, Monroe, Harlow, and Claude Cantrell; and sisters, Mattie Cantrell, Elsie Wright, and Lina Keeton.

Parley is survived by five sons, Leslie Carter & Letha Cantrell, Harlow & Donna Cantrell, James Dorsey & Diana  Cantrell, Jesse Cantrell, Lowell & Wanda Cantrell, and daughter-in-law, Beverly Cantrell; nine grandchildren, Kevin Cantrell, Wade & Chelsea Cantrell, Christopher Cantrell, Melissa & Anthony Mathies, Nicole & Mark Murphy, Joannie & Jimmy Wright, Jeanna Marie & John Williams, Travis & Mattie Cantrell, and Casey & Whitney Cantrell; eleven great grandchildren, Mason Cantrell, Hudson Cantrell, Cameron Cantrell, Wes Cantrell, Jackson Cantrell, Jalyn Brooks, Skylar Mathies, Sawyer Cantrell, Declan Cantrell, Gabriel Cantrell, and Christian Cantrell.  As well as a host of nephews and nieces and his beloved church family that loved him so dearly.

Funeral service 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at the Walnut Grove Primitive Baptist Church, with Elder Ricky Holbrook, Elder Doyle Keeton, and Elder Jonathan Rigsby officiating.  Burial to follow in the Peaceful Valley Cemetery, Woodsbend, KY.  Visitation 6 p.m., Monday, April 15, 2024, at the Potter Funeral Home.
